~100% Miss after upgrade to 2.2S2

I've just upgraded from 2.0P1 to 2.2STABLE2 and, although I took over
an existing cache which gave about a 30% hit rate I am now getting
almost a zero hit rate. Has the swap state file changed so as to
make the old cache unuseable? There are no validation errors when
squid starts.

Also the standing CPU load has gone up from about 20% to about 45%.

Together, these make me seriously consider backing out the upgrade.

Configuration is Slackware 3.5 Linux, kernel 2.0.36 (libc 5), 486SX
33, 32MB RAM, cache size 200MB, memory cache 8MB, always direct for
local pages, never direct for others, single parent (CERN 3.0A in
proxy only mode), gcc version egcs-2.90.29 980515 (egcs-1.0.3
release), office cache for about 35 users. As far as possible the
config file was patched with differences from the old config file.

The hit rate is coming up a little now, so it is looking like the
whole of the existing cache has been written off even though it is
still there.
