Removing expired objects from cache

How I remove expired objects from cache and free up space. Giving -U signal
will work or not ? How does squid Handles caches when the cache sized is
reduced e.g initially setting up 2.5GB and when that fills up setting up
the size to 2.3GB to free up space.
