squid 2.1 forks 20 processes - why ?

I installed Squid 2.1 under Linux 2.0.35 with the following
configure options:

configure \
--prefix=/opt/squid \
--enable-gnuregex \
--enable-async-io \
--enable-cachemgr-hostname=gomorra \
--enable-err-language=German \
--enable-poll

Squid works perfectly however I see 20 process of Squid running.
I always thought Squid does not fork and I have never seen
such a behaviour under Solaris ?
