I'd say forget about any one-off hack to do compression. Take a look at
Apache and think of being able to open up the log files as a pipe instead.
That way it's totally up to the local site what they do with their logs.
Apache has an example pipe-program called rotatelogs which automatically
renames large logfiles without needing to restart the server at all. It
gets around heaps of OS incompatibility issues and looks cute too ;-)
[it had better work - I haven't tried it myself *-) ...]
