An update: the results have been as good as expected if not better:
Responsiveness has improved by a factor of 4 (according to Googlebot).
CPU waste has been reduced, roughly by a factor of 20. Also memory
usage has dropped to 1/4th ; I expect this will also benefit the build
farm performance.
