help with config file

Hi,
I sent a message earlier, I think it wasn't sent, so I am sending a similar one
again.

As I said in our introduction, we are group of students novice in squid code.
We are trying to add new variables in the config file, so we can use them later
on in the code.
could you direct us to the right way / place in the source code so squid will
recognize the variables?

any help would be appriciated.
