Perhaps it's not suitable for Squid, but if it were, SGI's State Threads
is now license compatible with Squid.
State Threads is a cross-platform (based on Netscape's Portable Runtime)
state machine library that has an API that looks to the programmer like
a threads library. It had some pretty impressive results for Apache (of
course, Apache isn't exactly a screamer normally, so maybe that's not
saying much). Anyway, it might be a nice choice for implementing the
Squid 3 networking layer.
Feel free to kick me if I'm misguided.

SGI has relicensed its open source State Threads library. Formerly
under the Netscape Public License (NPL), version 1.1 of the library is
now dual licensed under the Mozilla Public License (MPL) version 1.1 or
the GNU General Public License (GPL) version 2 or later.
