yes, I've been thinking of this too. We have already config option for
mem debugging: --enable-xmalloc-debug. Perhaps I should ifdef the checks
with that option? Or simply document define inside mempools that enables
checks? I'd rather avoid cluttering ./configure with options most people
do not use.
